U.S. Rep. Giffords released from Hospital

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Arizona) has been released from TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Giffords has been at the Houston rehabilitation facility since two weeks after being the victim of a gunshot wound to the head , six people were killed and 13 others injured in that incident when a gunman opened fire in front of a Safeway grocery store in Tucson, Arizona, on January 8.
“Congresswoman Giffords has shown clear, continuous improvement from the moment she arrived at T.I.R.R. five months ago,” said Dr. Gerard Francisco, the hospital’s chief medical officer. “We are very excited that she has reached the next phase of her rehabilitation and can begin outpatient treatment. We have no doubt that she will continue to make significant strides in her recovery.”
In an interview with the Arizona Republic, published last Thursday, Giffords’ chief of staff, Pia Carusone, said the congresswoman’s limited ability to speak means she communicates mainly through facial expressions and hand gestures.
“She is borrowing upon other ways of communicating. Her words are back more and more now, but she’s still using facial expressions as a way to express – pointing, gesturing,” Carusone said.
Giffords has posted two images of herself showing her smiling and with her hair cropped short on her Face book page on Sunday. These are the first photographs of her since the January 8th tragedy “Wow! I saw her at the very end of March, and even then, Gabby was all there, her smile, her personality. And she looks even better now,” wrote Linda Lopez, an Arizona state senator. “I think people are going to be very happy to see how great she looks. For someone who’s undergone what she’s endured, it’s really something. I feel relieved. She looks beautiful.”
Her rehab at the Institute for Rehabilitation and Research Memorial Hermann will continue, although she will be an outpatient who commutes daily from the home that her astronaut husband, Mark E. Kelly, has in League City, Tex., near Houston.
