USA beats France to reach World Cup final VS Japan

Lauren Cheney (midfielder) redirected a cross from Heather O’Reilly (midfielder) to give the USA a 1-0 lead in the first half. France came back 10 minutes into the second half with Gaëtane Thiney (forward) deflecting the ball off the left post, tying the score.
Megan Rapinoe (midfielder) from Redding, California played a key role in the US victory. Rapinoe entered the 1-1 tie game with 25 minutes remaining in the second half. She earned a corner kick, lofted the ball toward the far post, and Abby Wambach (forward), considered the best in the world with her head, charged at the far post. She jumped over French goalkeeper Bérangère Sapowicz and nodded the ball forcefully into the net, scoring in her third consecutive game, giving the US the go-ahead score in the 79th minute.
A one-touch pass from Rapinoe to Alex Morgan (forward) in the 82nd minute, sent Morgan free into France’s penalty area, she patiently held the ball, touching it once, twice, drawing Sapowicz out of goal, then chipping a shot off her hands to put the Americans ahead, 3-1.
“Megan came off the bench and changed the game,” US Coach Pia Sundhage said. France’s coach Bruno Bini lamented their missed chances. “We had a lot of chances and played a very good game except the first ten minutes,” said Bini. “We were as good as we could have been. It was very physical and we stood up to this. But they have a lot of experience.
The US will face Japan, who beat Sweden 3-1,  in the  final on Sunday, July 17th. They will seek to become the first team to win the Women’s World Cup three times, after taking titles in 1991 and 1999. As well as being ranked No.1 in the world by FIFA the US are also the reigning and three-time Olympic champions.
